چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Pyrethroids (i.e., deltamethrin) are one of the most common insecticides that are used extensively in agriculture to control insects. Oxidative stress is one of the main mechanisms of pesticides, including deltamethrin, in developing toxicity. Many plants contain high levels of antioxidants that can play a role in absorbing and neutralizing free radicals. The current study aimed to assess the oxidative and protective role of Satureja khuzestanica essential oil in alleviating the detrimental effect of deltamethrin and the induced oxidative stress on the hearts of the male Wistar rats. Methods: In total, ۲۸ Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups of seven animals per group. Group ۱ was considered the control group, and group ۲ received deltamethrin (۰/۰۱mg/kg). Moreover, group ۳ received deltamethrin and Satureja khuzestanica essential oil (۲۵mg/kg), Group ۴ received Satureja khuzestanica essential oil (۲۵mg/kg). The treatment was extended for two months, and subsequently, the heart tissues of all rats were evaluated to investigate histopathological changes. Results: The results showed that Satureja khuzestanica essential oil significantly reduced the toxic effects of deltamethrin in the hearts of the rats (P <۰.۰۵). The results of heart tissue pathology confirmed Satureja khuzestanica’s protective effect against deltamethrin (P <۰.۰۵). Conclusion: The protective effect of Satureja khuzestanica essential oil can be due to phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities, which can be used as an effective factor in the prevention and improvement of the toxic effects of deltamethrin.
