چکیده مقاله:

Background: Avian mycobacteriosis is one of the most significant diseases affecting domesticated and captive birds. This chronic and zoonotic disease, commonly found in pigeons worldwide, poses a major public health threat. Methods: In this report, a nine-year-old female racing pigeon presented to the veterinary hospital of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz with signs of lethargy, anorexia, and swelling in the abdominal area. Abdominal rigidity and a palpable abdominal mass were noted during the clinical examination. The bird was then sent to the radiology department for further evaluation and differential diagnosis. Results: According to the radiology report, the results showed a soft tissue mass without calcification, changes in bone opacity, hepatomegaly, and involvement of the lungs. A cloacal sample was taken to confirm the initial results and rule out the presence of mycobacterium. Ziel-Nielsson staining was then performed on the prepared slide. After applying the Nielsson staining, numerous red acid-fast bacilli were observed, confirming the presence of mycobacterium. Conclusion: When cytology is combined with radiographic findings, it becomes a rapid diagnostic tool for identifying avian tuberculosis efficiently and promptly. Therefore, in cases where symptoms of abdominal enlargement are present, it is crucial to consider mycobacterium as a possible cause.
