Background: Pyrethroids, including deltamethrin, are common pesticides that are widely used in agriculture and pest and insect control today. One of the main mechanisms of pesticides toxicity including deltamethrin, is oxidative stress. Many types of plants contain large amounts of antioxidants that can play an important role in the absorption and neutralization of free radicals. In this study, the effect of coadministration of Satureja khuzestanica essential oil and deltamethrin on the kidneys of male Wistar rats was investigated. Methods: ۲۸ male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups. Group۱: was considered as control, group ۲: received Satureja khuzestanica essential oil (equal to ۲۵mg/kg carvacrol ۲۵mg/kg), group۳: received deltamethrin (۰.۰۱mg/kg), and group ۴: received
Satureja Khuzestanica essential oil (equal to ۲۵mg/kg carvacrol) & deltamethrin (۰.۰۱mg/kg). The treatment was extended for sixty consecutive days, serum samples and kidney tissue of rats were used to assess the extent and severity of renal toxicity by measuring the biochemical (Bun and serum creatinine) and histopathological parameters as below: Bowman's capsule, hypercellularity, hyalinosis, glomerular basement membrane thickness and fibrosis. Results: SPSS۲۶ software and Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney and one way ANOVA tests were used to analyze the statistical data. The results showed that Satureja khuzestanica essential oil did not significantly reduce deltamethrin-induced renal toxicity in male Wistar rats and can cause long-term damage to kidneys. Coadministration of
Satureja Khuzestanica essential oil and deltamethrin cause a significant increase in histopathological parameters of renal toxicity including hypercellularity (P <۰.۰۵), hyalinosis (P <۰.۰۵) and basement membrane thickness (P <۰.۰۵) compared to the control group. Conclusion: Satureja khuzestanica essential oil could not reduce deltamethrin induced renal toxicity. It is suggested that the exact mechanism of kidney injury caused by long term exposure of deltamethrin as well as
Satureja Khuzestanica essential oil be investigated in future studies.
