Phytochemical and Antioxidant Evaluation of Salvia mirzayanii Extracts Prepared with Different Solvents

Salvia mirzayanii Rech.f. & Esfand. is a member of the Lamiaceae family and is known to possess a wide range of pharmacological properties including antimicrobial, antioxidant, cytotoxic, anticancer, and others demonstrated during experiments conducted on this species. This plant is used for treating various ailments in Iranian traditional medicine. This research has focused on the analyzing the phenolic compounds and radical scavenging activities of hexane, acetone, and methanol extracts of S. mirzayanii. The antioxidant activities of these extracts were assessed using three standard methods: DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS. Among all these extracts, hexane extract showed the highest Trolox-equivalent Ferric reducing activity ۱۲.۷۲ ± ۰.۰۳ µmoL/g. The hexane extract also recorded the highest activity in the ABTS assay ۱۱.۸۶ ± ۰.۰۵. On the opposite side, the acetone extract of S. mirzayanii had the highest total phenolic content ۷۱.۹۱ ± ۰.۰۳ GAE/g, and with methanol extract put the total to ۵۴.۷۵ ± ۰.۰۱ mg GAE/g. In addition, S. mirzayanii exhibited the highest total flavonoid content ۱۵۶.۴۰ ± ۰.۰۲ mg quercetine equivalents/g. These results reveal that S. mirzayanii possesses potent antioxidant activities, indicating its potential usefulness in the food industry and pharmaceutical applications.
