چکیده مقاله:

This study examines the factors influencing Agricultural Machinery Service Providers (AMSPs) for rice production in the Fogera Plain of Northwestern Ethiopia, emphasizing their role in enhancing farmers’ livelihoods and socioeconomic development. A survey of ۳۶ AMSPs showed that most are family-owned enterprises, with an average operator age of ۴۲.۶ years and an average of ۳۶ years of farming operational exprience, typically employing two or more workers. The primary services offered include land preparation using tractors, irrigation pumping, and rice custom milling—activities vital for improving agricultural productivity and rural income. Profitability among AMSPs is mainly determined by total assets, machinery investment, service capacity, and operational efficiency. However, the sector faces constraints such as high initial investment costs, rising fuel and labor expenses, frequent equipment downtime, and limited skilled labor. Efficiency and returns for rice custom millers depend on operator experience, facility capacity, maintenance expenses, and taxation, while irrigation pump operators face poor working conditions and inadequate support. Maintenance is primarily handled by independent mechanics, in-house staff, or local garages. To address these challenges, targeted interventions are essential, including enhanced operator training, improved financial services, and stronger regulation of fuel and maintenance systems. Government programs such as tax incentives and low-interest loans have supported asset acquisition and service expansion. Strategic measures—like preventive maintenance, efficient scheduling, and energy-saving operations—can improve profitability and sustainability. Coordinated actions among government bodies, NGOs, and local stakeholders are crucial to strengthening rural mechanization and ensuring sustainable agricultural growth in the Fogera Plain.
