Copper-Based Metal Organic Framework as an Efficient Catalyst for Green Synthesis of Heterocyclic Compounds

A Cu₂(bdc)₂(bpy) Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) with high catalytic efficiency was synthesized using a straightforward solvothermal approach. This framework was constructed from ۱,۴-benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) and ۴,۴'-bipyridine (bpy) as organic linkers. Comprehensive structural characterization, including Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Thermoهravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement, confirmed the formation of plate-like particles ranging from ۰.۵ to ۸ μm in size. The material exhibited a significant surface area of ۴۲۲ m²/g with an average pore diameter of ۱.۷۷ nm. The catalytic efficiency of the synthesized MOF was evaluated in a one-pot, three-component reaction for the synthesis of tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyran derivatives and the Biginelli reaction. The reactions proceeded with excellent yields (۹۰–۹۷%) while utilizing environmentally benign solvents, such as ethanol, in accordance with green chemistry principles. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrated remarkable stability and reusability, maintaining high activity over multiple cycles. These results position Cu₂(bdc)₂(bpy) as a highly efficient and eco-friendly catalyst, offering a practical solution for synthesizing valuable heterocyclic compounds with applications in drug development and advanced materials.
