Political Stability and Tourism in Iran

Tourism is a crucial driver of economic growth and cultural exchange, fostering international understanding and contributing significantly to national revenue. This study examines the impact of political stability on Iran’s tourism. For this purpose, the number of foreign tourists in Iran has been considered as a representative of tourism. Also, the political stability index from the International Country Risk Guide (ICRG) has been utilized. Additionally, the exchange rate, GDP per capita and trade openness have been included in the model as control variables. Using data from ۱۹۸۴ to ۲۰۲۲, the research applies ARDL approach, the findings indicate that political stability has a positive effect on the number of foreign tourists. According to the results, an increase in GDP per capita increases the number of foreign tourists entering Iran, while trade openness reduces the number of tourists entering. Also, according to the results, the exchange rate does not have a significant impact on the arrival of tourists to Iran.
