The urgent need to reduce the environmental impact of petroleum-based bitumen in pavement construction drives the exploration of sustainable alternatives. This study evaluates bio-oils derived from biomass via pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) as partial bitumen substitutes. Through comprehensive rheological, and thermal analyses, the performance of bio-oils (SCP from pyrolysis and SCH from HTL) was compared against virgin bitumen (VB). SCP exhibited superior flexibility and fatigue resistance, making it ideal for cold climates and dynamic loading. Conversely, SCH demonstrated enhanced thermal stability and stiffness, suitable for warm climates and heavy traffic conditions. SCH's higher polarity improved compatibility with bitumen, reducing viscosity, while SCP enhanced low-temperature performance. Both bio-oils outperformed VB in durability, aging resistance, and moisture tolerance. These findings highlight bio-oils' potential as eco-friendly modifiers, offering tailored solutions for diverse pavement demands, reducing fossil fuel reliance, and advancing sustainable infrastructure.
