چکیده مقاله:

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is both a common medical complication during pregnancy and a public health challenge. Several studies have investigated the prevalence of GDM in Iran and reported different results. The current study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of evidence regarding the prevalence of GDM in Iran. Methods: We systematically searched international (i.e. PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Sciences, and Google scholar), national (i.e. SID, Iranmedex, Magiran, Irandoc, Medlib) databases, as well as Grey literature to identify relevant studies using the following keywords: Iran, GDM, and gestational diabetes mellitus, prevalence. Identified articles were thoroughly reviewed, and their quality was evaluated. Then, required information was extracted for meta-analysis. Results: Of ۹۰۷ identified articles, ۴۸ were eligible for full-text review. In total ۵۱۲۵۹ subjects, with a mean age of ۲۷.۰۵ years, were investigated by these studies. The prevalence of GDM in Iran was ۱۰% (CI ۹۵%: ۹-۱۱, p-value<۰.۰۰۱). The prevalence of GDM has increased in recent years and reached ۱۶% during the period of ۲۰۱۶ to ۲۰۲۰ (CI ۹۵%; ۱۲-۲۰, p-value<۰.۰۰۱). Conclusion: The prevalence of GDM is increasing with a mild slope in Iran, which indicates a major challenge for the health of mothers, fetuses, and infants. Hence, policy-makers should pay more attention to this issue. Keywords: Prevalence, Gestational diabetes, Iran, Meta-analysis
