چکیده مقاله:

Background: Leukocytosis refers to an increase in the number of white blood cells to more than ۱۱,۰۰۰ per microliter in adults. Given the importance and existence of multiple causes of an increase in the number of leukocytes, this study investigated the epidemiological characteristics of leukocytosis in hospitalized patientsMaterials and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on patients aged ۱۸ years and older hospitalized in Shohadaye-Ashayer Hospital in Khorramabad during the years ۲۰۱۰ to ۲۰۱۳, whose leukocyte count was higher than ۱۱,۰۰۰ per microliter. Patients were evaluated for age, gender, medical and drug history, presence of fever, and neutrophil percentage at the time of hospitalizationResults: Among the ۳۱۷ patients studied, ۱۹۴ had neutrophils and ۱۲۳ had lymphocytosis. The reason for the increase in neutrophils was diagnosed in ۲۲.۴% of leukemia and ۲.۵% of leukocyte reactions. In ۶۳ neutrophils with leukemia, the total leukocyte count was higher than ۴۰,۰۰۰ per microliter. The reason for the occurrence of lymphocytosis was diagnosed in ۲۴% of leukemia and ۲.۸% of autoimmune diseases, and in ۷۲ lymphocytic leukemia patients, the leukocytosis was higher than ۴۰,۰۰۰ per microliterConclusion: The results showed that leukocytosis above ۴۰,۰۰۰/μL can be related to malignancies, leukocyte reactions, and sometimes infections. However, in lower leukocytosis, chronic inflammatory diseases, drug reactions, myocardial infarction, or surgeries should be considered
