چکیده مقاله:

Psychoanalytical Criticism focuses on the relationship between literature and the hidden layers of characters' minds. When applied to depression, it explores the way internal conflicts may lead into their emotional state. Depression is caused by sorrowful events in one's life leading into mood disorder that can occur in all types of people. A stressful situation can trigger feelings of depression, and these feelings can make it more difficult to deal with stress. Paul Auster's The Book of Illusions deals with the protagonist's depression and isolation due to his family's death in the plane crash. This study aims at investigating how emotional stress can play a major role in causing depression or be a symptom of it. The researcher makes use of descriptive method in order to analyze the selected literary text. To conclude, Paul Auster believes that while one may not be able to avoid unwanted disasters. But he or she can handle the stress these situations cause.
