چکیده مقاله:

Bribery in building permit processes is a widespread challenge with deeply damaging effects on the sustainability of architectural projects. This report examines how corruption undermines the core purpose of building permits, which is to ensure public safety and regulatory compliance. By enabling developers to bypass essential codes and standards, bribery leads to compromised structural integrity, reduced building quality, and significant safety hazards. The consequences extend across all dimensions of sustainability. Environmentally, corruption facilitates the approval of projects that ignore environmental impact assessments, use non-sustainable materials, and contribute to pollution and resource depletion. Socially, it promotes inequitable development, leads to community displacement, and neglects public welfare. Economically, bribery inflates project costs, diminishes long-term asset value through substandard construction, and discourages foreign investment by creating an untrustworthy market. Addressing this issue requires a multi-pronged strategy focused on strengthening governance, ethics, and transparency. Key recommendations include simplifying complex regulations, implementing digital tools like online permitting platforms and Building Information Modeling (BIM) to reduce human interference, and enforcing strict penalties for corrupt practices. The report emphasizes the critical role of professional ethics among architects and calls for a collaborative effort from policymakers, professional organizations, and industry stakeholders to foster an accountable, transparent, and sustainable construction environment. This collective action is vital for mitigating the risks of corruption and ensuring that architectural development contributes positively to society and the environment.
