Applications, Impacts, and Future Directions of AI in Health Policy: A Narrative Review

Background and Aims: The healthcare system in Iran faces challenges such as an aging population, workforce shortages, and unequal access to healthcare. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers a promising solution by improving decision-making, optimizing resources, and enhancing patient outcomes. Integrating AI into health policy could create a more responsive, equitable, and sustainable healthcare system. This study aims to explore AI applications in Iran’s healthcare sector, assess its potential impacts, and emphasize the need for proactive and ethical policies. We hypothesize that strategic AI implementation, guided by ethical considerations and collaboration, can significantly improve healthcare outcomes. Methods: A narrative review was conducted on studies published between ۲۰۱۴ and ۲۰۲۴, focusing on AI’s role in healthcare policy. A comprehensive search of PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Science Direct databases identified relevant studies. Eligibility criteria included reputable journals, English-language studies, and direct relevance to AI in healthcare policy. After screening titles, abstracts, and full texts, thematic analysis was performed, and the quality of studies was assessed. Results: Out of ۵۷۴ articles, ۲۳ were selected. Findings suggest AI improves resource allocation, strategic planning, and access to healthcare services. AI’s predictive capabilities aid disease forecasting, and telemedicine enhances rural access. Ethical principles and infrastructure expansion are key for integration. Conclusion: AI offers significant potential in Iran’s healthcare system. Future research should focus on AI’s applications, risks, and regulatory frameworks to maximize its impact. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Health Policy, Healthcare System
