Study of Culture-Specific Items in Mina Sarabi’s Persian of Tess of the d’Urbervilles: A Newmark’s Model

چکیده مقاله:
The researcher of the present research aims to find out how Mina Sarabi has translated the culture-specific items in Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Hardy. In order to reach this goal, first, the researcher had to find all of the cultural items in Tess of the d’Urbervilles. The researcher classified the cultural elements according to the five categories which Newmark (۱۹۸۸) has introduced for different types of cultural concepts and elements, and compared them with their English equivalents by using Newmark’s model of translation strategies for translating CSIs as a reference. Finally, the researcher found ۶۵۶ cases of CSIs (In this paper, ۱۴ samples were randomly selected from among ۶۵۶ cultural and social items), and it was concluded that among other strategies which the researcher has examined, transference, cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, functional equivalent, synonymy, through translation, naturalization, componential analysis, modulation, couplet, recognized translation, paraphrase, and notes have been applied by Sarabi for the translation of cultural items. 'Transference' strategy was the most frequently used strategy. The others respectively are: synonymy, paraphrase, descriptive equivalent, recognized translation, couplet, cultural equivalent, through translation and componential analysis, naturalization, modulation, notes, and functional equivalent.
