چکیده مقاله:
As one of nature's most powerful carotenoids and antioxidants, astaxanthin has many health benefits, from reducing wrinkles to enhancing your daily exercise routine. This powerful pigment provides orange-red color and has been shown to support vision health, promote brain and heart health, and even increase male fertility. Most importantly, this antioxidant is easy to incorporate into the diet and can be easily found in a wide range of nutritious food sources. Astaxanthin (AX) is a dark red ketocarotenoid found in aquatic animals such as salmon and shrimp, and especially in algae, and has a unique molecular structure that may facilitate antioxidant effects during physiological stress. Physical activities and sports exercises can cause oxidative stress and the production of free radicals in the body, which are harmful to body cells and may cause dysfunction and cell death. In this review, the effect of astaxanthin supplementation on oxidative stress in athletes has been investigated. Evidence shows that astaxanthin supplementation is a carotenoid with high antioxidant power that inhibits free radicals produced in the body and modulates endogenous antioxidant defense system responses. However, these observations in athletes and human samples are still reported with equivocal data. Due to the lack of rigorous and fully controlled scientific research, future research is necessary to draw a stronger conclusion about the effectiveness of astaxanthin supplementation in athletes.
