چکیده مقاله:

Drug delivery systems are specialized formulations or devices designed to deliver therapeutic agents and provide their precise delivery to target physiological sites, increasing the efficacy of treatment and minimizing systemic toxicity. Sustained-release drug delivery systems are an innovative development in pharmacotherapy that provides extended therapeutic action by releasing drugs in a controlled manner. They consist of nanomaterials or miniaturized devices that are biocompatible, can degrade within the body, display excellent viscoelastic properties, and possess an extended half-life in the circulatory system. The objective of the present research was to examine available scholarly literature related to the significance of sustained-release drug delivery systems to the patient and the healthcare system.A systematic search of different databases, i.e., PubMed, Ovid, Scopus, Embase, Medline, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Cochrane with a cutoff date of ۳۰ March ۲۰۲۵, was done. The review covered those studies that had investigated the multifaceted advantages of sustained-release drug delivery systems in terms of patient outcomes and effectiveness in healthcare, improved compliance, fewer side effects, and cost-effectiveness.Compared to traditional drug delivery systems, sustained-release drug delivery systems are more advantageous due to their enhanced effectiveness, automation, precision, and efficacy. Sustained-release drug delivery systems are designed to extend therapeutic drug levels in the systemic circulation to maximize therapeutic efficacy and reduce dosing frequency. By doing so, sustained-release drug delivery systems minimize adverse effects through stabilization of pharmacokinetic profiles, maintenance of consistent plasma drug levels, and improvement of treatment adherence due to simplified dosing regimens.
