Introduction: Today,
diabetes is considered an important global challenge for the health and well-being of human societies, and diabetic foot ulcers are among the most common and severe symptoms of
diabetes and the most important, challenging, and costly wounds. This complex disease requires multiple and multifaceted medical care beyond simple blood sugar control. Adherence to self-care behaviors in patients with chronic diseases is very important. Therefore, it is important to encourage patients to participate and accept responsibility in doing them correctly in improving their health and preventing the recurrence of the disease. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of determining self-care behaviors in diabetic patients with diabetic foot ulcers in Shohada Ashayer Hospital in Khorramabad city in ۲۰۱۹. Materials and methods: The current study is a descriptive-analytical study that was conducted using available sampling on ۱۱۰ patients with diabetic foot ulcers hospitalized in the surgical, internal, rehabilitation, and orthopedic departments of Shohada Ashayer Medical Training Center in Khorramabad. A two-part questionnaire including demographic information and questions related to self-care in diabetic foot ulcers was used to collect data. Data analysis was done with statistical methods of mean, patient deviation, absolute frequency, relative frequency, and chi-square test with SPSS software (VERSION ۱۶). Findings: Only ۱۰% of the studied people had performed self-care behaviors well. Also, self-care behaviors had a significant statistical relationship with the variables of age, level of education, gender, occupation, income, duration of diabetic foot ulcers, and hospitalization due to diabetic foot ulcers, but no significant statistical relationship was obtained with married people (۰.۰۵< p). Conclusion: The results of the research showed that the knowledge of self-care behaviors was weak in most of the people studied. Since teaching self-care behaviors to patients is one of the main duties of healthcare staff, especially nurses, people with chronic diseases need constant and continuous training. Therefore, self-care training has a great contribution to preventing the recurrence of diabetic foot ulcers.
