Investigating the Fear of Negative Evaluation and Expressing It Among Students of Shahrekord University

This research examines the relationship between fear of negative evaluation and assertiveness in students of Shahrekord University in ۲۰۲۴, considering that student life is a critical stage in the formation of professional identity and cognitive-social development. Educational pressures combined with fear of negative evaluation can lead to anxiety, avoidance of assertiveness, and aggression. This descriptive-analytical study was conducted with the participation of ۶۰ undergraduate and graduate students, ۴۱.۶۷% of whom were female and ۵۸.۳۳% male. Data were collected using standard Gambrill and Ritchie Assertiveness and Watson and Friend Fear of Negative Evaluation questionnaires and analyzed using correlation and regression statistical methods. The findings showed that there was a moderate positive correlation between positive and negative assertiveness (۰.۴۲), a negative correlation of assertiveness with avoidance was also observed (-۰.۳۱ and -۰.۲۵), and avoidance was positively correlated with aggression (۰.۳۷). Fear of negative evaluation also showed a strong negative correlation with positive assertiveness (-۰.۴۵) and negative (-۰.۳۸) and a strong positive correlation with avoidance (۰.۵۲). The regression model showed that ۴۷% of the variance in fear of negative evaluation could not be explained by the predictor variable. The results of this study suggest that fear of negative evaluation is associated with decreased assertiveness and increased avoidant and aggressive behaviors, and it is suggested that assertiveness skills training and cognitive-behavioral interventions be used to reduce fear of evaluation in university settings. These results highlight the importance of addressing mental health and social skills in students so that they can better cope with academic pressures and prevent negative psychological consequences resulting from fear of negative evaluation.
