Explaining the Position of Architecture and Urban Planning in the Urban Design Process and Their Role in Improving the Quality of Urban spaces (Case study: Mashhad city)

Over the past years, the place of architecture and urban planning in the urban design process has been criticized in terms of definitions, process, and relationship with other disciplines and their role in improving the quality of urban spaces. It has been common for urban design projects to differ from what was intended in terms of architecture. Similarly, the relationship between urban planning and urban design is often misread and ambiguous in nature. While urban design emerged to fill the gap between urban planning and architecture, such a gap may still exist, especially at the theoretical level. The aim of this article is to critically analyze the theoretical foundations of the urban design process from a practical perspective. It also examines the theoretical gap in the field of architecture and urban design, within the process itself, in its relationship to urban planning and improving the quality of urban spaces. This research shows that the place of architecture and urban planning in the urban design process is crucial for improving the quality of urban spaces, achieving sustainable development, and ensuring that cities respond to the challenges of the modern era.
