Epidemiological Study of Lichen Planus in Ardabil Province, Northwest of Iran

Lichen planus is an inflammatory skin disease with clinical and histopathological findings that affects between ۰.۵ and ۱% of the population. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiologic status of Lichen planus in Ardabil province. In this descriptive cross-sectional study, all patients with suspected Lichen planus referred to Dermatology Clinic during ۲۰۲۰-۲۰۲۲ were clinically examined and if Lichen planus was definitively diagnosed, a pre-prepared checklist was completed and included in the study. The studied variables included age, sex, occupation, marital status, education, place of residence, family history, patient complaint, site of the lesion, pattern of lesion, and systemic disease. A total of ۱۵۰ patients with vitiligo were included in this study, ۶۳.۳ of whom were female and ۳۶.۷% were male. The highest incidence was in the age group of ۴۰ years and above (۵۵.۳%). The most common complaint of patients was pruritus (۵۵.۳%). The pattern of conflict was generalized in ۵۳ patients (۳۵.۳%). The most common areas of involvement were the face and head (۶۴.۶%), followed by the upper extremity (۵۲.۶%) and the lower extremity (۴۸.۶%). The findings showed that most of patients were female, over ۴۰ years old, housewife, married, had primary education up to diploma, and lived in Ardabil. Nearly one- third of patients had systemic disease; Itching was the main complaint of patients; more than one-third of patients had generalized involvement, with the face and head, upper limbs, and lower limbs being the most common sites of involvement.
