Study on the Correlation Coefficients of Morphological Traits of Chickpea (Cicer Arietinum L.) under Salinity and Drought Stress

چکیده مقاله:
The salinity and drought stresses as abiotic environmental stresses are among the major causes of yield loss in agricultural production in arid and semi-arid areas such as Iran. In order to evaluate the effect of salinity and drought stress on seed germination and seedling growth of Chickpea (including local masses of Khoi and Chaypareh) two separate factorial tests were done in a completely randomized design with three replications in Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Center of West Azerbaijan Province. Salinity and drought stress treatments included different levels of osmotic potential of sodium chloride and polyethylene glycol ۶۰۰۰ in three levels of -۴, -۸, -۱۲ bar with control treatment (distilled water). The results showed that the levels of salinity and drought had significant and decreasing effects on all the studied characteristics such as The percentage of germination, rate of germination, radical length, plumule length and the fresh weight of seedling. The correlation coefficients evaluation indicated that there was a high and positive correlation under salinity and drought stress as in case of drought stress, the highest and lowest correlation coefficients belonged to plumule length with fresh weight of the seedling (r=۰.۹۸۰) and The percentage of germination with plumule length (r=۰.۸۲۳), respectively. In the case of salinity stress, the highest and lowest correlation coefficients belonged to the percentage of germination with the rate of germination (r=۰.۹۸۱) and plumule length with the fresh weight of the seedling (r=۰.۷۴۹), respectively. Thus, the fresh weight of the seedling under the drought stress and the rate of germination for salinity stress can be used and studied as the evaluation and selection criteria of Chickpea tolerating these stresses and more study contract.
