The Role of Nutrition in the Growth and Development of Premature Infants: A Review Study

A premature infant is defined as one born before ۲۸ weeks of gestation or with a birth weight of less than ۱۰۰۰g. The nature of prematurity leads to various complications, including infections and brain injuries, with cerebral palsy rates increasing by ۱۳%, contributing to neonatal mortality worldwide. Growth failure is one of the most common issues faced by preterm infants. Various factors influence growth and development, but numerous studies have identified malnutrition as a critical factor due to the infant's vulnerability. Early nutrition is associated with a lower incidence of developmental, cognitive, and motor problems. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for premature infants, especially during the first six months of life. However, breastfeeding presents significant challenges for mothers, leading to inadequate bonding and delayed growth. Therefore, our study aims to determine the role of nutrition in the growth and development of premature infants.
