Action Research and Big Data in Education: Transforming Teaching Through Learning Analytics

Thanks to advanced technologies and possibilities provided by big data, teachers and researchers, therefore, claim that the application of big data in education helps to comprehend students’ behavioural patterns. Learning analytics, a new paradigm for understanding learners and learning, can be applied to the old method of action research that was focused on teaching practice reflection. To that end, this paper overviews the concept of action research in big data and presents case-studies to clarify how the application of big data and intelligence solutions can help in the identification of the weak students, development of better teaching schedules, as well as the enhancement of the personalization of educational processes. Thus, using large datasets in education, teachers can choose proper evidence-based practices and create student-centred learning environment. However, the application of Big Data in action research also has concerns such as ethical concerns in big data, privacy on big data and the necessity of teacher to learn big data literacy. This paper outlines these possibilities and challenges and how data-driven action research could help in changing the education sector and improving knowledge of the educators.
