چکیده مقاله:

Academic attrition poses a significant challenge to Iran’s education system, particularly in rural areas, leading to decreased graduation rates and long-term socio-economic consequences. This study investigates the underlying causes of student dropout rates in Gilan Province, Iran, focusing on elementary and middle school students over a five-year period. Data were collected from ۴۲۳ students across ۱۲ schools in both urban and rural areas of Langarud, Astaneh-ye Ashrafiyeh, Siahkal, and Lahijan using a stratified random sampling method. Findings were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis to identify key factors contributing to student dropout rates. Findings indicate that the lack of appropriate educational infrastructure is a primary factor preventing students from continuing their education. Dropout rates are higher in rural areas than in urban areas, with the most significant attrition occurring at the end of elementary school (sixth grade) and in middle school. Additional challenges include insufficient educational resources, inadequate welfare and healthcare services, and lack of parental involvement in the learning process. The study suggests that comprehensive reforms are necessary to mitigate dropout rates and improve student retention. Key recommendations include improving school infrastructure, integrating digital learning tools, increasing parental engagement in education, and enhancing access to mental health and healthcare services. Moreover, leveraging media campaigns to emphasize the value of education and utilizing technology-driven solutions can play a crucial role in addressing these challenges. In conclusion, reducing student attrition in Iran requires a holistic approach that combines policy reforms, educational infrastructure improvements, technological integration, and community involvement. By implementing these strategies, Iran can build a more inclusive and sustainable education system that fosters student success, particularly in underserved regions. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to assess the long-term effectiveness of these interventions and develop region-specific solutions tailored to Iran’s diverse educational landscape.
