Magnesium Sulfate and Moderate-Intensity Training Improve Lithium-Induced Liver Injury in Male Rats

Background & Objective:  Liver damage is a common complication of lithium (Li). The present study investigates the preventive role of MgSo۴ and moderate-intensity training MIT on Li hepatotoxicity in male rats.  Materials & Methods:  Seventy-two male rats were distributed into ۱۲ groups, control, Li۱۰ mg/kg/day/ip, MgSo۴ ۸۰ mg/kg/day/ip; MIT; Li۴۰ mg/kg/day/ip; Li۱۰+MgSo۴; Li۱۰+MIT; Li۱۰+MgSo۴+MIT, MgSo۴+MIT, Li۴۰+MgSo۴, Li۴۰+MIT, Li۴۰+MgSo۴+MIT. All animals were under the exercise protocol for ۶ weeks and received the drugs daily. Then, a blood sample was taken from the heart to measure Cholesterol, Triglyceride, LDL, HDL, AST, and ALT. The liver was excised and then put in ۱۰% formalin to be sent to the lab for pathological investigations. Results:  Compared to the control group, Li ۱۰ and ۴۰ mg/kg cause severe liver injury, p<۰.۰۵. Instead, MgSo۴ and ۶ weeks of MIT (Li۱۰+MgSo۴, Li۱۰+MIT, and Li۱۰+MgSo۴+MIT), Li۴۰+MgSo۴, Li۴۰+MIT, Li۴۰+MgSo۴+MIT, in comparison with Li۱۰mg/kg and Li۴۰ mg/kg, reduces damage and improves the liver function, p<۰.۰۵. Conclusion:  MgSo۴ and exercise reduce Li-related, improved integrity together with liver function.
