The role of architecture in empowering the local community of dilapidated neighborhoods, Case study: Oudlajan

Empowerment refers to the process of enabling individuals and communities to gain control over their lives and influence the decisions that affect them. Empowerment is considered as one of the components of social stability, which plays a significant role in sustainable development. This research investigates the role of architecture in fostering empowerment within neighborhoods, specifically focusing on the Oudlajan neighborhood in Tehran. Our purpose is to explore how architectural design can contribute to social empowerment and community cohesion, ultimately leading to improved quality of life. We anticipate that our findings will highlight specific architectural elements that promote empowerment and offer actionable insights for urban planners and policymakers. To achieve this, we employ a mixed-methods approach, combining relevant documents and observation of neighborhood conditions.
