The prevalence and underlying factors related to hookah smoking among female student

Introduction: The increase in hookah smoking, one of the most common ways of smoking, among teenagers in Iran is worrying.Objectives: The present study was conducted with the aim of determining the prevalence and underlying factors related to hookah smoking among female students in Kermanshah city.Materials and methods: This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among ۴۰۷ secondary school girls in Kermanshah in ۲۰۲۱. In this study, an electronic, confirmed, valid and reliable questionnaire was used with ۱۴ items. The participants were selected through a simple random sampling from the secondary high school schools. The data were entered into SPSS ۲۲ software and analyzed.Results: The results showed that ۵.۶% of students have used hookah during the last year and ۱۰.۵% in their lifetime. The starting age of hookah smoking among students was ۱۳.۴ years. ۱۹.۲% of families and friends of students had used hookah. A relationship was found between hookah smoking in students with hookah smoking in family and friends. The risk of hookah smoking in those whose family uses hookah is ۲۸.۱ times that of those whose family does not use hookah (confidence interval = (۵.۸, ۲.۹۲) ۹۵%). The first place of hookah smoking was home (۴۳.۵% of cases).Conclusions: The current study clarified the role of family and friends in the use of hookah in female students. Considering the increase in hookah smoking among adolescent girls and the important role of family and friends, it is suggested that this subject should be included in future preventive interventions.
