Recent research on smart cities and urban planning reveals that the concepts and theories of smart cities are rapidly shaping the future of urban planning. This review article aims to examine the position of smart city theories within the framework of urban planning theories. Initially, the foundational concepts and various dimensions of smart cities are discussed, followed by an analysis of how these theories influence traditional urban planning theories in areas such as the optimal use of modern technologies, data management, and the enhancement of urban quality of life. The paper comprehensively analyzes and interprets various findings, including the challenges and opportunities of integrating modern technologies in urban development and their impact on sustainable urban growth. The research employs a systematic review methodology, utilizing credible scientific sources and prior studies in the field. The findings demonstrate that smart city theories play a pivotal role not only in the socio-economic transformations of cities but also in directly influencing urban planning structures and policymaking. The paper concludes by exploring emerging trends and foresight in the field of smart cities, offering recommendations to improve urban planning in the digital era. This research highlights the importance of understanding the interconnections between advanced technologies and urban policies, proposing strategies to leverage these capacities for comprehensive and sustainable urban development.
