چکیده مقاله:

Along with growing evidence that tooth loss can cause cognitive decline, scientists are recognizing it as an emerging risk factor for brain impairments. This article has the primary purpose of reviewing research on the relationship between tooth loss and adverse neurological outcomes that include dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and cerebrovascular disease. Consequently, we systematically searched the PubMed database for epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and experimental investigations associated with oral and brain health. The data show that people with tooth loss are more vulnerable to cognitive disorders and reduced brain function. Possible explanations for this link might be chronic systemic inflammation caused by periodontal disease, reduced chewing leading to impaired cerebral perfusion, and common predisposing factors, including diabetes and atherosclerosis. It has also been demonstrated that the severity of tooth loss is associated with the level of cognitive impairment and that possible positive effects may be achieved through dental care such as the provision of dental prosthetics. Furthermore, studies show that changes in masticatory activity affect the area of the hippocampus and suppress new neurons generation thus causing neurodegeneration. The review indicates the dearth of cooperation between dentistry and neurology about integrating reachable strategies that may be used to embrace oral health and, therefore, mind performance. Enhancing dental health care by satisfying periodontal treatment and replacement of lost teeth may potentially reduce the deterioration of cognition and the incidence of stroke. More studies should entail longitudinal designs to get a better understanding on the relationship as well as potential interventions
