Potential filed images contain anomalies with a large range of amplitudes, then the filtered data also will contain large and small amplitude responses, making the latter hard to delineate. In this paper, we developed a new edge detection filter to enhance the edges of geological sources from potential field data called BASTA (Balanced Analytic Signal of the Tilt Angle), which utilizes by the use of the orthogonal Hilbert transforms of the Analytic Signal of the Tilt Angle (ASTA) filter. This will equalize signals from sources buried at different depths. In order to evaluate the designed filter, we compared the results obtained from presented filter with those from recently applied methods, testing against both synthetic data, and real aeromagnetic data from the South Africa. The results demonstrate that the new filter permits better extraction of the edges of causative anomalies, as well as better highlighting several anomalies that either are not shown in tilt derivative, analytic signal and other methods or maybe not very well defined.
