Effect of Exercise on Serum Sex Hormones and Sexual Function in Men Over۵۰ Years of Age

Background & objectives: This study investigated the effect of regular physical activity on serum androgen levelsand sexual functionin men over ۵۰ years of age.Materials and Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, ۳۳ men with a mean weight of ۷۹.۲±۸.۵ kg and BMIof ۲۶.۱۳±۳.۳ kg/m۲ were randomly selected. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups: control andconcurrent training. Serum levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), estradiol, erectile dysfunction, and otherdependent variables were measured ۴۸ hours before and after the training period. Data were analyzed using analysisof covariance (ANCOVA) (P=۰.۰۵).Results: The results showed that serum levels of DHEA (P=۰.۰۰۱) and estradiol (P=۰.۰۱) in thesimultaneous training group showed a significant increase compared to the control group. The results alsoshowed that sexual function in the indices of sexual function(P=۰.۰۳۹), orgasmic function (P=۰.۰۱), andtotal scores (P=۰.۰۰۴) showed a significant increase in the simultaneous exercise group compared to thecontrol group.Conclusion: These findings indicate that regular physical activity can be considered an effectiveintervention in improving the levels of DHEA and estradiol, sexual function of men over ۵۰ years of age,and emphasize the importance of exercise in maintaining the quality of life and sexual health of older men.
