An Introduction and Review on Variational Integrators

Variational integrators are a group of geometricintegrators based on discrete Hamilton-Lagrangeequations. In this paper, first, a brief review onvariational integrators and their properties is carriedout. To better clarify the subject, a simple example isselected and solved by the method. Next, acomparison was made between the results of theproposed method and conventional integrators suchas Runge-Kutta. It was shown that by using thevariational integrator technique, the energy of thesystem will be computed more precisely with respectto Runge-Kutta.
