Exploring Symbolism in "Kafka on the Shore" by Haruki Murakami

Apart from being a passage to greater themes and motifs in the novel, symbolism provides a deeper way ofreflecting on self and existential revelation. This article explores the rich tapestry of symbolism that threads its wayacross the narrative of "Kafka on the Shore": from labyrinthine corridors in the mind, cats, to the purifying embraceof rain. Actually, through the symbols that will be taken into consideration in this paper-such as the labyrinth, cats,rain, music, the Oedipus complex, and metaphysical elements-readers are able to understand in which ways identity,destiny, and undistinguished boundaries between reality and fantasy are taken into consideration by the novel. It isonly by teasing out the symbolic language used in "Kafka on the Shore" that the various layers of meaning buriedunderneath the text surface-as indeed they should-reveal themselves to showcase a journey undertaken existentiallyby its protagonists and deep-seated mysteries of the human psyche.
