The performance of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) is governed by the morphology of individual splats and how each particle flattens. A splat is a single unit-cell, and understanding its properties is crucial for predicting the behavior of the entire coating. The substrate's transition temperature affects the splats' morphology and adhesion strength of the applied coating. Therefore, this study investigated the morphology of the splats and the critical transition temperature of yttria-stabilized zirconia (۸YSZ) and lanthanum magnesium hexaaluminate (LaMgAl۱۱O۱۹) powders. Based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, a temperature of ۴۰۰ °C was identified as the transition temperature for both LaMA and ۸YSZ compositions in the final coating.
