The Relationship Between Absolute Lymphocyte Count and Recovery Rate in Children with Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Background: Acute immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in children is a benign and self-limiting disease. This disease is considered chronic ITP when thrombocytopenia persists for more than ۱۲ months. Total leukocyte count (TLC) and absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) at the time of diagnosis have been suggested as predictors of persistent/ chronic ITP. Objectives: The main objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between ALC at the time of diagnosis and with the course of the ITP. Methods: In this study, ۴۳ patients diagnosed with acute ITP under the age of ۱۴ years were evaluated. For all patients, complete blood cell count was performed at the time of admission. ALC at the time of diagnosis was calculated and compared in the recovered group and the chronic ITP group. Demographic information of patients including age and sex were also recorded and finally analyzed using SPSS software version ۲۲ and Independent T-test test. Results: ۲۳ (۵۳%) patients were male and ۲۰ (۴۷%) patients were female. The mean age of patients at the time of diagnosis was ۳.۶۲±۳.۳۹ years. The majority of patients (۷۹%) in this study recovered and ۲۱% of patients were in a chronic condition. The mean Absolute lymphocyte count at the time of diagnosis in the recovered group and chronic ITP group was ۵۳۶۲±۲۶۰۸/mm۳ and ۳۹۴۱±۱۷۹۶/mm۳, respectively (P = ۰.۱۳). Conclusions: The results of present study showed that although the ALC at the time of diagnosis was higher in the recovered group than in the chronic ITP group, but this difference is not statistically significant.
