Psychological challenges of infertile men with Azoospermia candidates for ICSI

Background: Despite the development of reproductive biology, the problem of couples' infertility has not been completely solved. Azoospermia men who do not have sperm in their semen are associated with many challenges for having children and have a low chance of treatment. Infertility treatment using assisted reproductive techniques (ART) has also brought concerns for these patients. In the present study, with the aim of explaining the psychological challenges of infertile men seeking alternative infertility treatments, a survey was conducted on couples about the priority of the solutions before them.Method: The current research is phenomenological, and its method is qualitative. The study group consists of ۱۲ infertile men with azoospermia who were referred to Kamali infertility treatment center in ۲۰۲۳. These patients underwent testicular sperm extraction (TESE) and ICSI. Then the data was collected using the semi-structured interview method and coded and analyzed using the Dickelman method. The coding process was analyzed in the form of codes, concepts and primary categories.Findings: Psychological challenges of infertile men applying for ART, in order of priority, include fear of not getting results after using ART, fear of childless life, fear of divorce due to infertility, not accepting donated embryos and challenges related to the reactions of family and surrounding people.Conclusion: In general, reviewing the categories and concepts obtained from this research and summarizing them can reveal the concerns and difficulties experienced by infertile men with Azoospermia and provide the main causes of their problems to experts and officials.
