This study proposes shear modulus method to predict the ultimate bearing capacity of shallowfootings on sand under loads, for all three modes of shear failure of foundations in dry sand. Theobjective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the prediction algorithm for load-settlementbehaviour under serviceable and extreme loads, for model foundations on each of loose, mediumdense and dense sand. The proposed non-linear stepwise algorithm that was used for bearing capacityprediction. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was used to observe strains within the soil duringloading. The prediction for a foundation on medium dense sand (𝐷𝑟 = ۴۸%) was the most accurateover the full settlement range, as well as at ultimate bearing capacity, where the error was less than۱%. Using the same input parameters, stress-settlement predictions were of satisfactory accuracy overthe entire settlement range.
