Seismic performance of foundations is a critical issue in earthquake-prone regions, where theseismic forces generated during earthquakes can pose significant challenges to the stability and safetyof structures. This study involves a strip footing resting on a layer of soil above a rigid basement. Theeffect of various parameters such as the friction angle and thickness of the soil, and the horizontalseismic coefficient on seismic bearing capacity of strip footings over soil with limited thickness isinvestigated by using the finite element limit analysis (FELA). There exists a critical soil thickness,which the bearing capacity is constant for values higher than this critical value. It was observed thatthe critical thickness to width ratio increases with a decrease in horizontal seismic coefficient, whereasit increases with an increase in the soil friction angle.
