ASSESSMENT OF AGGREGATE BACKFILLS FORGEOSYNTHETIC-REINFORCED MSE WALLS

Geosynthetic reinforced MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) walls comprise a diverse range ofreinforced backfill types, which can be broadly categorized into two groups: frictional and finegrained.The fine-grained backfills can be further classified into fine-friction, cohesion, and cohesivefriction.This paper presents the major features of each backfill type category in the context ofgeosynthetic reinforced MSE walls. Additionally, the importance of drainage design considerations formechanically stabilized earth walls using fine grain materials is discussed, along with the necessaryprecautions for maintaining performance when using such materials. Finally, the paper offers someinsights into the observed or perceived issues associated with the fine-grained reinforcement of thebackfills.
