Effect of Electron Beam Irradiation on Physical and Mechanical Propertiesof Bakelite Valves

Bakelite valves are used in diaphragm gas meters. In this research various Bakelite valve speciesare exposed to ۱۲ MeV electron beam irradiation (EBI) at two doses of ۶۰ and ۸۰ kGy. Theirradiations are done under vacuum at room temperature and the effects are studied via FTIR,SEM, TGA, tensile and impact tests. The results show that at ۶۰ kGy, physical and mechanicalproperties of the samples enhance while at ۸۰ kGy deteriorate or do not change considerably. FTIRshow that the -OH peak disappears upon irradiation at both doses. SEM proves the appearance ofdeffects on samples at ۸۰ kGy. TGA shows enhancement in thermal behavior of the samplesespecially at ۶۰ kGy. Impact strenght experiences considerable improvements especially at ۶۰ kGy(+۱۸۰% ) while tensile strenght improves a little at the same dose (+۲%) and deteriarates at ۸۰ kGy(-۳۴%). It can be said that EBI at ۶۰ kGy improves the said physical and mechanical properties ofthe samples while by increasing the dose to ۸۰ kGy the properties start to detoriorate.
