An Analysis of English Foreign Language Students’ Barriers in SpeakingEnglish Fluently at Shiraz University in Shiraz

This research delves into the challenges faced by Iranian students in achieving fluency inspeaking.English proficiency is crucial for global communication. The study focused on tenjunior EFL students at Shiraz University who had already completed five semesters of Englishspeaking courses. The goal was to identify the persistent barriers to fluency and explore thestudents' strategies for overcoming these challenges. Employing a qualitative approach, theresearch collected data through interviews and analyzed it using Griffee's method, whichinvolved transcribing audio recordings, reading transcripts, identifying themes, and summarizingthe coded data. The findings revealed that individual barriers, such as nervousness and a lack ofconfidence, were the most significant obstacles to fluency. Language barriers, environmentalfactors, and interpersonal challenges also played a role. The study also explored how studentssolved these barriers. Some practiced with peers or in front of a mirror, while others utilizedaudio-visual media like YouTube videos, movies, and Instagram. The research concludes thatmore effective strategies and interpretations are needed to help students overcome these barriersand achieve greater fluency in English.
