The Effect of Teaching Source Language Culture onIntermediate EFL Learners’ Reading Comprehension Ability

Reading is a crucial skill in foreign language teaching and is beneficial for both teachers and EFL students. Itoffers EFL learners the opportunity to be exposed to the target language and enhance their language proficiencythrough appropriate input [۱]. For this purpose, this study attempted to investigate the effects of sourcelanguage culture on reading comprehension through reading culturally oriented texts. The study was conductedwith ۲۰ intermediate English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. The participants of each gender wererandomly assigned into two equal groups: group A (Target Culture = TC), group B (Source Culture = SC).During the treatment, some reading passages related to American and English cultures, and Persian culturematerials were taught to group A, and group B, respectively. At the end of the study, a researcher-made readingpost-test was administered. The result of the paired samples T-test revealed the significant effects of culturalfamiliarity. That is, participants who were taught within the culturally oriented text outperformed those whoweren't taught.
