Alleviation of Depression in the Elderly: Using English Language Teaching Methodology as a Health Treatment

چکیده مقاله:
During history different methods of English language teaching have been presented, yet they were not thought to be also effective in helping people to go through another experience using the same method, by which they could enjoy a happier and healthier life. This research uses self-regulation, as a method of a learning a second language, to teach older adults with Alzheimer’s to alleviate their emotional bad feelings. The participants of this study included ۴۰ Iranian male and female. The needed data for the present study were gathered through the following instruments: the Persian version of the Depression Inventory by Beck et al. (۱۹۶۱), semi-structured interview, and audio-reflective journal. The findings confirmed a significant impact of English language teaching on the primary-level Alzheimer’s elderly’s depression. The findings have some implications for the families of the old people with Alzheimer, the psychiatric centers, psychiatrists, and English language teaching policymakers.
