چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: Vitamin D deficiency(VDD) is understood to be associated with infections, respiratory problems and intracranial hemorrhage in premature infants and plays a major rolein neonatal mortality. The present study is conducted in order to determine the relationshipbetween serum vitamin D(VD) level of preterm neonates at birth and their prognosis at ۲ yearsof age.Method: This cross-sectional study was performed on ۲۶۲ neonates, including ۱۵۵ (۵۹.۲%)with normal prognosis and ۱۰۷ (۴۰.۸%) with abnormal prognosis in the Neonatal ward ofGhaem Hospital from ۲۰۱۴ to ۲۰۲۳; the convenience sampling method was used. The datawere collected by a researcher-made questionnaire, consisting of laboratory evaluations andmaternal and neonatal features. The condition of neonates with normal prognosis (NormalDenver developmental screening test (DDST) II) and abnormal prognosis (death or delayeddevelopment) was compared at the age of ۲ years. Results: A significant difference was obtained in gender, gestational age, ۱st and ۵th minuteApgar scores, birth weight and the neonate's vitamin D level between the twogroups(P=۰.۰۰۰). A significantly higher prevalence of VDD amongst cases with lowergestational age and lower birth weight. Moreover, as the ۲۶ level of vitamin D decreased, their ۲-year-old prognosis worsened. Conclusion: the prognosis of these children at ۲ years of age was significantly associated withthe severity of VDD; this difference was still remarkable after controlling the confoundingfactors.
