The use of landscape metrics in the analysis of land use changes using remote sensing and GIS(Case study: Soren recreational-tourism area in Baneh city)

In the past century, human activities, including agriculture, urbanization, industry, trade, and recreation, have considerably transformed ecosystem structures and functions to satisfy their requirements for goods and services. Among these changes, land cover and land use change play a crucial role. Monitoring land changes is essential for future planning and natural resource management. The use of landscape metrics with remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) as supporting tools can provide valuable information for decision-makers and observers. This study aims to analyze land use changes in the Soren Baneh region by using Landsat ۸ OLI satellite imagery from ۲۰۱۳ to ۲۰۲۱. The satellite images were processed and managed using the Google Earth Engine (GEE), a web-based platform for digital satellite image processing. Landscape metrics were then employed to examine and understand the current state of land use structure. The Patch Analyst extension in ArcGIS ۱۰.۸ software was utilized to calculate these metrics. Based on the analysis of landscape metrics, all indicators indicate the degradation and fragmentation of the study area over the past decade. At a class level, the analysis reveals a decrease in natural range and forest cover by ۱۵%, while human-made classes such as residential gardens and second homes have expanded across the region. Additionally, barren lands have increased by more than ۵% due to natural factors. The preservation of this pristine area's beauty as a common asset requires further research from academic institutions and more diligent scientific management and supervision from responsible authorities.
