Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have received tremendous attention as fluorescent probes for detectionof diverse heavy metal ions (HMIs). Nevertheless, the fluorescence sensing mechanisms of versatile CQDs withrespect to different HMIs remain elusive. Herein, the fluorescence sensing behaviors of GQDs with amino andcarboxyl groups toward commonly encountered Cr۶+, Fe۳+and Cr۳+ under different conditions are systemicallyexplored. The results show that the fluorescence of CQDs can be enhanced by Cr۶+/Fe۳+ and Cr۳+ at pH ۵.۸. Theelucidating of the fluorescence sensing mechanisms of GQDs toward different HMIs paves the way fordeveloping versatile sensing platforms for monitoring of HMI contamination.
