Examining the Effects of a Pandemic on the Professional Quality of Life of Medical Personnel in an Urban Hospital Setting in Vietnam

Aims: This study aimed to measure the professional quality of life (ProQOL) of healthcare workers (HCWs) in an urban hospital in Vietnam during an epidemic and identify associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among HCWs in an urban hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam, from July to September ۲۰۲۲. A total of ۹۲۴ participants were recruited in the study. The Professional Quality of Life Scale for Health Workers (Pro-Qol Health) was employed.  Findings: The mean professional quality of life score for HCWs was moderate. Being female was positively associated with the PS domain (Coef.=۰.۷) but negatively related to STS (Coef.=-۰.۹) and MD domains (Coef.= -۰.۹). Living with a spouse/partner positively affected the CS domain (Coef.=۰.۶). Lower education level was negatively correlated with CS and PS scores. Participants having other professionals (e.g. technicians, midwifery, etc.) had higher CS (Coef.=۰.۹) and PS (Coef.=۱.۱) scores but lower BO (Coef.=-۱.۰), STS (Coef.=-۰.۶) and MD scores (Coef.=-۰.۶). Being staff was negatively associated with CS and PS scores. Higher working days per week were negatively correlated with CS (Coef.=-۰.۴) and PS scores (Coef.=-۰.۴), while a higher number of working hours per day was positively correlated with BO (Coef.=۰.۲) and STS scores (Coef.=۰.۱). Conclusions: This study showed a moderate professional quality of life among Vietnamese HCWs after the pandemic. To improve the ProQOL of HCWs, the healthcare system's capacity should be strengthened as a top priority, along with providing support for healthcare professionals in managing stress and developing psychological resilience.
