In this study, an analysis is conducted on theoptimal placement of fault current limiters (FCLs) in an activedistribution network (ADN). The purpose of using FCLs is toalleviate the adverse effects of DERs on the protection part of theAND which are electromagnetic stresses increment and costlymodification or replacement of protective devices. To achieve themaximum impact of FCL while minimizing the overall cost, amulti-objective optimization function is proposed and utilized.This scheme determines the ideal locations for FCL and theircorresponding ideal impedance values. Additionally, a significantemphasis is placed on maintaining the coordinated operation ofthe protective directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) within theADN. To address this concern, the preservation of DOCRscoordination is integrated into the FCLs optimal placementproblem. Moreover, a novel hybrid approach is devised to reducethe cost of FCLs. This approach involves the initial adjustment ofthe DOCRs at minimal expense, followed by the resolution of theFCL allocation problem.
