Antibiotic resistance pattern of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from nosocomial infections in Aleshtar hospital, Lorestan province

Introduction: Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of Klebsiella species. K. pneumoniae is one of the most important bacteria causing nosocomial infections. This bacterium threatens public health and leads to increased hospital costs and mortality rate. The purpose of this study was to determine the pattern of antibiotic resistance in K. pneumoniae in nosocomial infections.Methods: This study was performed on ۵۱ samples of Klebsiella isolates from ۵۰۰ patients in three units of Aleshtar hospital in ۹ months. The antibiotic resistance of K. pneumoniae to ۱۸ antibiotics was performed by Kirby Bauer disk diffusion method.Results: The frequency of K. pneumonia among ۵۰۰ samples was determined ۵۱ cases (۱۰.۲%). The largest number of K. pneumoniae was isolated from the infectious unit (۴۹.۰۲%). The frequency of K. pneumoniae based on the source of infection for urine was ۲۲ cases (۴۳.۱۴%), sputum ۱۷ (۳۳.۳۳%), stool ۶ (۱۱.۷۷%), wound ۴ (۷.۸۴%), blood ۲ (۳.۹۲%), and cerebrospinal fluid ۰ (۰%), respectively. K. pneumoniae resistance to antibiotics included: ceftriaxone (۹۴.۱۲%), ciprofloxacin (۹۰.۲۰%), ofloxacin (۸۶.۲۷%), cefotaxime (۷۸.۴۳%), nalidixic acid (۵۸.۸۲%), nitrofurantoin (۵۶.۸۶%), aztreonam (۵۴.۹۰%), ampicillin/sulbactam (۵۰.۹۸% ), ticarcillin (۴۵.۰۹%), cefepime (۴۳.۱۴%), colistin (۴۳.۱۴%), gentamicin (۴۱.۱۸%), azithromycin (۴۱.۱۸%), polymyxin B (۳۹.۲۲%), piperacillin/tazobactam (۱۹.۶۱%), amikacin ( ۱۵.۶۹%), imipenem (۵.۸۸%), and meropenem (۳.۹۲%).Conclusion: Meropenem and imipenem with the lowest resistance were the most effective antibiotics against K .pneumoniae. Ceftriaxone, and ciprofloxacin antibiotic had the lowest effect on the treatment of K. pneumoniae.
