چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: Tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgeries all over the world and is performed by various methods. This study aimed to investigate the complications of bipolar electrocautery method of tonsillectomy.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on ۲۳۴ patients, ۱۱۴ female and ۱۲۰ male individuals. The mean age of the patients was ۱۲.۲±۸.۳ (min=۳ and max=۵۸.۲) years. Some parameters including duration of surgery, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative hemorrhage, severity of pain were measured ۴ and ۲۴ hours after operation. The data were analyzed by SPSS software (Version ۱۵) using Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman tests. P values less than ۰.۰۵ were considered significant.
Results: In our study, the mean duration of surgery was ۱۲.۷±۴.۵ minutes, mean intraoperative blood loss was ۳۶.۶±۱۰.۸ ml, and postoperative hemorrhage was observed in ۳.۴ % of patients. The mean pain scores ۴ hours after operation were ۲.۱±۰.۷ and ۲.۷±۰.۸ for age groups below and over ۱۰ years old respectively, while these scores were ۲.۴±۰.۸ and ۳.۲±۱ after ۲۴ hours of operation for them respectively with the difference being significant (p < ۰.۰۵). Furthermore, duration of surgery correlated significantly with intraoperative blood loss (r=۰.۱ and P=۰.۰۱) and pain ۴ hours after operation (r=۰.۱ and p=۰.۰۰۴).
Conclusions: In our study, mean intraoperative blood loss, postoperative hemorrhage, and duration of surgery were greater than what has been reported in the majority of previous studies.
